About the Play

Grown Ups is an acerbic comedy by the famed cartoonist and author of Knock Knock and Little Murders. It's about a middle-aged journalist who has, at last, grown up - only to find he's trapped in a world of emotional infants.

In Jake’s family, everyone speaks, but no one hears. It is a transgenerational battle for recognition and validation. Jake, a frustrated writer, struggles to set boundaries between his family and his invasive parents, save a floundering marriage, and protect his daughter from the emotionally isolated childhood he experienced. In a family where antagonistic behavior is the basic unit of affection, where emotional fragility keeps everyone at extremes, and where avoidance is the coping mechanism of choice - can anyone feel loved? Jules Feiffer takes an unforgiving look at a family where no one has achieved the maturity indicative of the adult. Though painfully raw, and embarrassingly honest, in its portrayal of family conflicts and frustration, Grown Ups balances the picture with smart comedic structure and characterization - allowing us to laugh with humility at the child in us all.

Grown Ups played in repertory with The Black Bird Returns.

A High 5 Pick of the Week.
