The Roundtable Ensemble

Roundtable Intern Program

The intern program, launched during our premiere production of Candida insures access to The Roundtable Ensemble for developing artists for whom our process has stirred an interest in the theater. The Roundtable Ensemble offers internships to these young artists in all areas of the company, from acting and design to production and press relations. Beth Chiarelli, our first intern who understudied the role of Candida in our premiere production best describes the possibilities of this program, and the opportunity it presents to those young in their craft.

"The process started when I got a call from our director asking if I was available to participate in the initial read-through. I had never understudied before, let alone played a major role. I was made to feel part of the cast from the beginning. At each stage of the rehearsal process I had my own time to work with the actors, director and stage manager. I got a full picture and practical experience of learning how character is created.

When I wasn't working, I was watching. The joy that came from observing the production take shape was something I hadn't expected. I saw the piece evolve and enjoyed the subtle shifts that occurred as the life of the play became deeper and richer. What a privilege it was to see how words on a page become a living, breathing work of art

It was also a privilege to understudy someone as generous and open as Terri Eoff, who played Candida. Her unending support put me at ease. We had a special collaboration of our own. We struggled together and laughed together as we tried to define a difficult, sometimes elusive role. I was continually inspired by and learned so much from the patience, discipline and grace that led her to such a beautiful interpretation.

When I talk to anyone about being 'Candida Two,' I inevitably say how lucky I feel to have been part of this production. Being a intern with The Roundtable Ensemble was a unique and wonderful hands-on experience."

The Roundtable Ensemble has continued to offer positions to interns in all aspects of our productions. We have had students assisting various designers as well as working on shows as technicians and board operators. The experience of participating in a professional theater production has been extremely valuable to these interns. The gratitude received for these opportunities has inspired us to continue and expand this program for our future productions.
